In the past, society didn't have access to information on mental illness. Discussing the various symptoms didn't happen. And few people compared the medication options. Ironically, individuals with bipolar benefit from a support system of family and friends.

Talking to others with the same disorder helps us fight back from the lows and work through the mania. Yet there are still people who feel ashamed of their diagnosis. They believe others will judge them based on the disorder instead of the person they are.

But family and friends who love us have already noticed our symptoms. They've seen our mood swings and behavior changes. An open and honest discussion can provide them with the knowledge they need to help us during the rough times. Anyone who has struggled with the dark side of bipolar knows how difficult it is to fight their way out. Why not have someone help you fight?
