Survival can mean several things. Some people require a career with a big salary. Others need a fancy house with a new car each year. But not everyone needs 'things' or 'stuff' to survive. They are the group who just wants enough food so they don't starve, a place to sleep, some clothes . . . and someone to support them emotionally and mentally during the dark times.
We don't need lessons to learn how to help others. And we don't have to read endless books telling us how to listen to someone in pain. Just treat them as we would want them to treat us . . . with compassion and patience. No amount of stuff can help us the way another human being can when the darkness hits. People help us survive, not stuff.
