The stigma attached to mental illnesses is not positive. People refrain from telling others they have a disorder because they don't want to deal with the negativity. But we should be able to talk about a condition that affects us. We discuss cancer, or diabetes, or heart problems. We talk about medical issues with friends and family members, coworkers, and strangers.
Yet we don't discuss something as important as a mental disorder because of people will judge us. And that's wrong. We should be able to share our concerns with our family or with friends so they can help us when we can't manage alone.
But the negative stigma isn't easy to overcome. And it won't be until more people reach out to help.
